Why Anyone Should Consider Going Organic and In a Hurry!

I will give you a quick rundown of what organic really means, and why I think people should only consume organic coffee.

1) No synthetic fertilizers or pesticides may be used to grow certified organic crops.

2) No genetically altered plants or animals may be used in certified organic items.

3) Items labeled 100% organic must only contain certified organic ingredients, except for water and salt.

4) Products labeled “organic” must consist of a minimum of 95 percent organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt).  Any remaining product ingredients must be comprised of non agricultural ingredients approved on the National List including  non-organically produced agricultural items that are not commercially available in organic form.

5) If you see the USDA organic logo it guarantees the product is either 100% Organic or 95% organic.

6) Food items labeled organic, such as organic coffee, can’t be treated with sewage sludge (yes modern crops are), or ionizing radiation.

I’m not trying to bore you with mindless organic labeling facts, but you need to understand what you’re dealing with “organic” products.  Onto Organic Coffee.  From the previously mentioned definition of  “certified organic” we know that organic coffee must contain at least 95% organic beans.

You may be thinking, “who cares if my coffee was grown organically?” well here’s a few reasons:

1) Not withstanding what you feel about standard farming practices, can you imagine drinking coffee treated with sewage sludge?

2) There’s the , I’m going to play mad scientist with your food, issue.  I don’t want my cup of Joe to have gorilla genes spliced in just so the beans can have less of a twang.

3) If you partake in decaf. coffee this is where it is important that you only drink organic coffee.  Regular coffees use nasty substances such as methylene chloride and ethyl acetate to process the beans.  Organic decaf. coffee is processed using hot water, and NO chemicals.  There seems to be evidence to suggest that drinking chemical processed decaffeinated coffees may lead to rheumatoid arthritis.

4)  Not only are chemicals bad for us, but think about the humble coffee farmers.   Many coffee farmers in developing countries are not able to read adequately, which may result in improper mixing of chemicals and inadequate protective clothing.

I have only listed a few points about the benefits of organic coffee.  It goes much deeper than the coffee itself.  A lot of toxins are released in the making of non-organic chemicals.

Lastly, one must consider the complete love and attention that comes from growing coffee organically.  The farmers constantly observe and coddle their crops, resulting in perfectly developed organic coffee.  I don’t care if you think I’m just trying to promote my agenda, or promote your good health, please give organic coffee a taste and pass the word.
