So what is in a Latte Macchiato?

By Brad On June 23, 2009 No Comments

One of the most popular hot drinks of the decade is the cafe Macchiato. The reason is, that is an optically and tastefully pleasing specialty from Italy. In fact, the words latte macchiato mean “spotted milk” or “marked milk”. A latte macchiato is nothing more than foamed milk, and a espresso put in it. But like everything, the details are important: a good marked macchiato is made of several layers, which do not run together. I guess this is one of the most popular coffee-drinks nowadays. You can get it around the corner at your nearest Coffee-house or make it yourself at home. The frothy milk is marked with a strong shot of coffee, and makes an excellent treat in the afternoon or with dessert.

The necessary tools should be available in every household: a flat pot, a whisker, a small can and a glass for the macchiato. A high glass, little bit more thick would be fine. You will put hot milk in it and the glass should be good enough for this. 1 milk capsule to make 6 fl.oz. (3/4 cup), 1 Latte Macchiato coffee capsule to add 2 fl.oz. (1/4 cup), Latte Macchiato becomes a 7 fl.oz. Beverage.

Now, when it comes to home making latte macchiato the most authentic way is to tuck in your pockets and buy yourself a good-quality espresso machine. Those are quite expensive as a real espresso is made by pressing 9 bar pressurized steam through your espresso powder. Only this way you get the distinctive and original espresso flavor.

A cheaper alternative would be to buy a small mocha-maker. But as the name already says you won’t get an espresso rather than mocha. The flavor is quite similar but it has a slightly stronger and earthier taste as the water is set under “only” 1-2 bar of pressure.

A latte macchiato is a tasty little drink that will tickle your taste buds. Traditionally encompassing a shot of espresso topped off with steam milk, the latte macchiato is definitely a great treat to start the day. It has a certain kick to it but has enough flavors that it will go down easily. Many Italians add a drop of sugar to this drink for a bit of sweetness.

Latte macchiato is a coffee beverage, which literally means marked milk. This refers to the method of preparation, wherein the steamed “pure” white milk gets “stained” by the addition of espresso. It differs significantly from café latte in that only ½ (or less) of an espresso shot is being used.

This drink is made by combining vanilla flavored syrup with steamed milk, pouring the espresso on top of the milk, and then topping it off with caramel sauce. [1] The sauce then melts from the heat of the espresso directly under it and seeps down into the drink. Other flavors are made by using different sauces to top the drink. This drink was invented by Paul O’Neill back in 1985 in Concord, Massachusetts.

Some newer cafes tend to add steamed milk to the espresso in a 1:1 ratio, as well as mixing the milk into the espresso, making it more like a miniature café latte or cortado. Some people call this piccolo latte.

Another variant of the drink, latte macchiato, conversely means “milk stained/marked (with espresso)”, and indicates milk with just a little espresso in it (always less than in a café latte). However, in certain preparations (which differ from place to place), latte macchiato has not much difference in milk-to-espresso ratio when compared to the café latte; café lattes are normally one-third espresso to two-thirds steamed milk.

Freezing Coffee Beans Retains Freshness – True or False ?

By Brad On June 22, 2009 No Comments

How should Coffee beans be stored, so you can enjoy the tastiest coffee from your bean to cup espresso machine One of the suggested methods is to put your ground coffee or coffee beans in the freezer. Is storing coffee in the freezer a good way to maintain freshness? What are the advantages and are there any disadvantages

Freezing has been used for centuries as a way to extend the life of many foods. A diverse selection of foods can be frozen. Freezing even maintains many of the vitamins and nutritional value of a wide variety of foods. Coffee, however, isn’t as likely a candidate for storage in the freezer.

Four main elements attack Coffee Beans stealing their freshness (and more importantly its taste

At first, freezing doesn’t seem to contain many of the offending enemies. However, appearances can be deceiving.

Coffee beans have been roasted in order to enhance flavor. The beans are also porous.and unfortunately a freezer can contain many other foods which have odours. The porous beans can absorb the flavors of many other frozen foods. Flavoured coffees can be pleasant, but no one wants to drink seafood or garlic flavored coffee.

Due to their porous nature moisture can also be absorbed by the coffee beans. Moisture attacks the Beans and causes the taste and flavour to be lost The more often you take coffee out of the freezer and put it back in, the more moisture absorption takes place into the bean. The only time you should even consider freezing coffee is if you have too much for normal use, in this situation freeze it only the one time. The more you take it in and out of the freezer, the more damage you do.

Freezing also breaks down the oils in the beans. The flavours of the coffee are enhanced by the oils it contains. Breaking down the oils means taking away flavour, and let’s face it, a large part of a good cup of coffee is the flavour.

In summary freezing is not the manner to store Coffee beans. The best results and to ensure coffee retains its taste store coffee in a cool, dry and air tight container away from the light and any source of heat. Freezing coffee is possible, and is best if you only freeze it once. The resulting loss of flavour and quality from repetitive freezing makes it a method of storage to stay away from.

Your best bet is to purchase only enough beans or ground coffee to supply you for 1-2 weeks. That way you will enjoy Coffee from your Expresso Coffee Maker or Coffee machine at its freshiest and best.

Gaggia Titanium Espresso Machines 101

By Brad On June 19, 2009 No Comments

Tired of making daily treks to the coffee shop and spending more money than necessary? Then the Gaggia Titanium Espresso Machine is the answer. This is not a typical discount store espresso machine made of cheap plastic that produces inferior espressos with limp froth. This goes beyond the expectations and wows even the most hard core cynic.

All-In-One

The Gaggia Titanium Espresso Machine is an all-in-one espresso, cappuccino, and coffee maker. Using push button technology and a brilliant LCD display for alerts and programming tips the Gaggia is one of the simplest espresso machines available on the market.

Other machines have a fairly significant waiting time between espresso making and frothing to allow the water to heat and steam to accumulate, it is not so with the Gaggia. Using Rapid Steam®Technology and two separate boilers, the Gaggia is ready to froth and steam milk while the espresso is brewing, not after. Wait time between espressos is barely noticeable.

Gaggia users rate the simplicity of ease and minimal cleanup as key considerations when purchasing the Gaggia. Making a beverage is a one or two step process.

For coffees and espressos simply choose the appropriate push button: there one is for espresso, one for regular coffee, and one for large coffee, there is also one for hot water for hot tea or cocoa. Make adjustments if desired, such as strength of coffee, volume of water dispensed and temperature of the beverage, the Gaggia can remember the personalization for the next brew.

If a cappuccino or latte is desired, froth the milk with the frothing wand or the automatic frother. The automatic frother takes all the guess work out of making the perfect steamed milk and froth. Simply insert cold milk into the frothing area and remove the thick foamed milk when it is done.

No Hassel Clean Up

Reviews of the Gaggia consistently brag about the no hassle clean up.The dreg drawer stores the used coffee pucks and alerts users when it’s full. To empty, simply pull out the drawer and rinse. The drip pan has a floatation device that rises as it fills up, once it is full, empty and then rinse.

The brew unit needs a good weekly cleaning for heavy use or every other week for less heavy use and Gaggia made sure this would be easy to. Using the enclosed wrench, the plates on the front can be removed to allow the brew unit to come out. The cleaning brush for the brew unit is part of the accessory package and makes cleaning up a snap.

Nothing Beats a Gaggia

Add together all the features of the Gaggia with the savings accumulated from not going to the coffee shop on a daily basis and it is easy to see that the Gaggia will pay for itself over time. This is one case where the cost of purchasing is justified by the savings incurred elsewhere.

Where to Find Fresh Hawaiian Kona Coffee

By Brad On June 16, 2009 No Comments

Just one sip of this type of coffee makes most people fans forever. It is grown in Hawaii and Kona coffee is known for its unique balance the is unbeatable taste. Grown on the slopes of Mauna Loa and Mount Hualalai in the north part of the state, as well as many Kona districts found on Oahu, this is one of the best coffees known.

To ensure that you get the best, freshest cup of gourmet coffee, buy Kona coffe beans! While Kona coffee’s are higher priced than other coffe blends, they are absolutely worth the price. After all, everybody around the world purchases this specific kind of coffee. There are different growing conditions like sunny mornings and afternoons that have humidity and rain. Although this is beautiful, the coffee is always flavorful and different.

Cuttings from Brazil were transplanted and used to grow the trees from which we get our gourmet Kona coffee beans today. In the 1800s, Samuel Reverend Ruggles brought the first Kona tree to Hawaii. Finding the perfect soil and weather combination in Hawaii, farmers soon expanded and started growing abundant crops on large plantations. There are more than 2,300 acres where fresh gourmet Kona coffee beans are grown. The cultivation of fresh, gourmet Kona coffee beans is so successful that some two million pounds are produced every year.

Every February through March, the Kona tree blooms. These blooms, called Kona snow, are visible as tiny white flowers. The green berries of the Spring turn to red fruit in the summertime that resembles cherries. It is a right time for the “fruit” to be harvested. By hand-picking every coffee bean, the freshness of gourmet Kona coffee is ensured.

Within one day of harvesting the fruit, it is run through a special type of equipment to help separate the pulp from the bean. This is followed by carefully-controlled fermentation of the beans, for 12 hours at lower elevations and for 24 hours at higher elevations. After the beans have been rinsed off lay them out on a drying apparatus to completely dry out which will take one to two weeks. You will have to be certain that your beans are dried and stored on parchment paper. Eight pounds of fruit are required to make one pound of fresh and gourmet Kona coffee.

You will even find that fresh, gourmet Kona coffee is classified by the type of seed. For instance, Type I has two beans per cherry or fruit, with one side being flat and one being oval. Type II beans are just one, round bean per cherry or fruit. After that, the beans undergo further grading based on several criteria, including size, type, bean moisture levels and purity. A better version of the Kona bean is evident when purchasing gourmet Kona coffee.

By Brad On June 12, 2009 No Comments

Selecting the right coffee beans is the first thing to do when you want to verify the flavor of your coffee. The taste of coffee beans is also verified by the method coffee beans since the beans pick from the trees.

Nowadays, coffee has turn into such a necessity for college student until working adult. A cup of coffee is extremely vital to wakes them up and keeps them going. No surprise if in nearly every morning people are eager to take a line on the coffee shop making this business grows to be very lucrative.

But do you ever imagine about what actually coffee is? The soul of coffee is in the coffee beans. Coffee beans are coffee plants’ seeds that originate from coffee cherries where every cherry usually hold two of the flat pits. Coffee plants are harvested by reason of the beans that contain caffeine and develop into most preferred export for various countries all over the world.

Unlocking the Secrets of Coffee Beans

The coffee beans processing starts with choosing. All coffee harvested in two way: strip picking or selective picking. Strip picking is a technique of harvesting the entire coffee plants either by machine or by hand. The product of this harvest is the combination of ripe and unripe cherries so that the flavor of the coffee beans is not always on the peak of its flavor. This techinque usually used by low-end coffee companies.

Meanwhile selective picking is methods of harvesting that oblige the worker to pick just red and ripe coffee cherries. So, the coffee beans resulted will be more smooth and fragrant and a lot more pricey. Either method, picking is one of the most significant steps in coffee production, since without it, the coffee beans will never be unshelled.

The actual~real dealing out of coffee beans can be wet or dry. Wet processing is technique that the coffee beans will dip to the water so that the bad or unripe fruits or rubbishes will float while the ripe fruits sink and that makes the resulting coffee is higher-end and more costly. So this course will require some specialized utensils that makes some of the pulp is removed during this process, the rest has to be removed either by the ferment-and-wash techinque or the newer mechanical demucilaging. Wet processing helps to maintain the coffee beans; meaning that the green coffee beans produced is less defective.

Unlike the modern wet dealing out, dry processing is the oldest and most natural technique of handing out coffee beans. The procedure is began on cleaning all coffee cherry after harvest and get sun dried on tables. To make sure they entirely dried and do not mildew, the cherries are turned by hand. The drying method is take about four weeks before dried cherry are stored in bulk to be hulled, sorted, graded and bagged. Hulling results in the removal of all of the outer layers of the dried cherries, leaving just the coffee beans behind.

Coffee

By Brad On June 10, 2009 No Comments

People have been drinking coffee in one form or another for hundreds of years. During those hundreds of years there has been debate after debate about whether or not it causes health problems. The simple truth is that there is no simple answer to the question.

Coffee has both pros and cons and these should be taken into consideration. For many people starting the day off without a cup of coffee would not even be an option. Many of these same people will drink multiple cups of coffee throughout the morning and some will continue throughout the day. These are the people who should look at both sides of the coin and then decide how much coffee they should or should not drink.

Good Coffee

As any morning coffee drinker will attest, coffee is an excellent pick-me-up. Practically everyone knows that is true. However, what many people don’t realize is that coffee does have other good qualities.  Some of those good qualities are actually health boosters, such as:

Research has shown that coffee may help reduce the risk of diabetes, particularly early stage diabetes. Coffee has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels and improve the body’s sensitivity to insulin. Some researchers say that 6 cups per day can reduce the risk of diabetes by fifty percent.

Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease both have been shown to be effected by coffee. People who drink coffee on a regular basis have an eighty percent less chance of having these diseases affect their body than non-coffee drinkers.

The risk of colon cancer is reduced by twenty –five percent by drinking just two cups of coffee per day. This may be due in part to coffee aiding in bowel functions.

Other health concerns that have been shown to be positively affected by coffee include: cirrhosis of the liver risk decreases by 80 percent and the chance of having gallstones is decreased as well.

Coffee contains many chemicals that are antibacterial and also contains more antioxidants than a cup of grape juice. The antioxidants help to fight infection and the chemicals found in coffee have antibacterial effects.

In addition, coffee has been shown to help prevent dental cavities and to be helpful to asthma patients. The latter is possibly due to the hot beverage opening up the passageways for breathing.

Bad Coffee

All of the good side effects do not mean that there are not some bad side effects. Coffee is addictive. People who drink coffee daily become addicted to the caffeine. The body becomes accustomed to having caffeine and when it does not it reacts in the form of headaches, depression-like moods, and imbalanced blood sugars.

Coffee can also slow the metabolic system down which makes it harder to maintain weight. There are some people who argue that coffee keeps them from eating, while this may be true, it is also true that metabolism slows down which stops weight loss.

Bottom of the Cup

The bottom of the cup, so to speak, is that just like anything else, coffee consumption should be in moderation. Coffee doesn’t have to be banned but it should be monitored and not over–indulged in.
